Overview
Maycroft is a home in the Kings Heath area of Birmingham, which can accommodate just over 5 residents - it has a 'Good' rating from the CQC. Care can be provided for those with learning disabilities.
At Maycroft, we are a Specialist Learning Disabilities Service, where all staff are
trained to the highest standards. Our team brings a wealth of experience in working
with individuals with learning disabilities. We are deeply committed to upholding the
core values of our organisation, which are Excellence, Passion, Integrity, and Caring
(EPIC).
Our operational framework is built upon the Active Support model, a concept that
embodies the essence of transforming person-centred plans into actionable, personcentred initiatives. The Active Support Model is a strategic approach dedicated to
empowering individuals with learning disabilities to actively and meaningfully engage
in the daily facets of their lives. It changes the idea of “caring for” by shifting the
emphasis to “working with,” promoting independence, and nurturing the individual’s
capacity to actively participate in their own life journey.
Active Support is characterised by dynamic and participatory assistance. It fosters
the inclusion of individuals with learning disabilities into the fabric of ordinary life,
enabling them to acquire new skills, explore a broader spectrum of opportunities,
and partake in activities alongside others receiving support within our service. This
integration results in the growth of vital relationships and social networks that are
integral to leading an everyday life.
It is essential to note that a comprehensive understanding of Active Support is pivotal.
Without it, there is a risk of providing inadequate or excessive assistance. It’s crucial
to recognise that support should be tailored to an individual’s specific needs and
abilities. In this regard, our approach at Maycroft encompasses the use of the “Handover-hand” technique. This technique involves a staff member gently guiding the
individual by placing their hands on the individual’s hands, facilitating the execution
of the activity being taught. This tactile guidance ensures a customised, effective, and
empowering approach to support, facilitating the development of essential life skills.
