Overview
The Little Sisters of the Poor are a Roman Catholic order of religious Sisters founded in France in 1839, with a Mission to care for the elderly poor in a spirit of humble service. We are committed to supporting the needs of vulnerable older people of little and modest means by providing a caring home with safe accommodation, respite provision, and palliative end-of-life care. Although the culture of the charity is Catholic, admission to our care homes is open to low-income elderly of at least 65 years of age, regardless of race, gender, nationality or religion. We welcome people from any background without exception. Residents are welcomed whatever their state of health or disability and appropriate support is put in place to meet their needs. We recognise that a growing number of elderly require care and support, and all applications are considered and prioritised according to the individual’s level of need and particular circumstances. Working in over 30 countries worldwide, our care homes use a relationship-centred care approach to create a family-style setting and home from home atmosphere for our residents - many of whom are lonely and isolated before they come to us. We strive to challenge ageism and disadvantage to ensure older people living with cognitive impairments and life limiting conditions are included in society and can lead fuller and more independent lives.
St Joseph's - Newcastle is a residential and nursing home in the Westmorland Road area of Newcastle Upon Tyne, which can accommodate 56 residents - it has a 'Good' rating from the CQC.
The Mother Superior, (the Registered Manager), heads our Caring Team. Dedicated Sisters, Staff, Lay Associates and Volunteers complement her. The staff consists of Religious Sisters, Qualified Nurses, Carers, most with NVQ 2 or 3 qualifications, Catering, Housekeeping and laundry staff, Maintenance staff, Administration personnel, Receptionists, Activities Co-ordinator and an Induction and Development Trainer for the staff.
Our home is equipped with three lifts which offer easy access for wheelchairs to our 56 en-suite bedrooms. Each room has a nurse call system and television link to the chapel to enable those who wish to follow services in the chapel from their own rooms. We have 4 units, spread across 3 floors. Each resident is assured freedom of worship. Residents are welcome to join us in the chapel for any of the services, Mass is celebrated daily. The Home has succeeded in cultivating a friendly, home-like environment that encourages engagement in communal activities and sustains a healthy relationship with families and other local organisations. Residents’ birthdays are celebrated with a monthly tea party and there are regular entertainments and participatory events. Everyone is included and encouraged to join in, however, at the same time, people's need for privacy is always respected.
