Overview
Turfcote was Built in the early 1850’s by a local family using the from the fruits of the Industrial Revolution; the Original building is constructed of sandstone exterior with the foundations and cellars in Grane Stone – ‘the hardest material known to man’…………according to one resident who used to work with it.
Later additions in 1900 gave the large lounge with the famous wooden ceilings, which we are told used to be the Snooker room. The snooker room is one of four lounge dinning rooms on the General Nursing and Residential unit. The other three are equally impressive with their plaster cornice ceilings.
Some minor additional office extensions were added in the late 1960’s which were used by the owners, and probably the first example of ‘working from home’.
The House fell into some disrepair in the late sixties but was rescued in 1987 and opened as Nursing Home. The local MP at the time Sir David Trippier attended the opening ceremony.
In 1990 a small extension was added to increase the number of rooms offered to patients.
In 2000 major refurbishment and extension took place and a new Turfcote footprint was formed and became what it is today.
The first extension replaced the old layout with new ensuite bedrooms and restored the original grand lounges and dinning rooms. Practical issues were attended at this point with large rooms and wide corridors and large new 13 person passenger lifts added in order to address future dependencies. Guidance from the Government White Paper ‘Fit for the Future’ was followed.
After discussions with Local Health Inspectors the Grand Coach House at the rear of Turfcote which used to house the carriages and horses was redeveloped into the current Dementia unit. A similar ‘Fit for the Future’ approach was used to develop the new Dementia unit : large en suite rooms, wide corridors and lift, several lounges.
