Dairy Lane Care Centre is a beautiful Victorian home set within peaceful private grounds in Houghton-le-Spring, providing a warm, friendly and genuinely homely environment for up to 22 residents.

Being a smaller care home allows us to really get to know the people who live with us — their life stories, routines, interests, preferences and the things that are important to them. Our aim is for Dairy Lane to feel like home, while providing the reassurance of personalised care and support 24 hours a day.

We specialise in supporting older people, including those living with dementia and memory-related conditions, with care centred around dignity, choice, independence and each person's individual needs.

Every resident has their own comfortable, fully furnished bedroom, with many rooms benefiting from en-suite facilities. Residents and families are encouraged to personalise rooms with photographs, ornaments, furnishings and treasured belongings to make their space familiar and meaningful.

Our welcoming communal lounges provide opportunities to spend time with others, enjoy activities or simply relax, while residents' privacy and choice to spend time independently are always respected.

We continually work to improve our environment to make it safe, comfortable, dementia-friendly and enjoyable for the people who live here.

🌿 Gardens & Outdoor Living

Our residents have access to secure outdoor spaces, including our gardens, covered gazebo and courtyard areas.

We recognise how important fresh air, nature and outdoor space can be for wellbeing. Our outdoor areas provide places to sit, relax, enjoy activities and spend valuable time with visiting family and friends.

We continue to develop our outdoor spaces with the involvement of residents and families, creating areas that are welcoming, accessible and enjoyable throughout the seasons.

🍽️ Fresh, Home-Cooked Food

Food is an important part of life at Dairy Lane. Our kitchen provides fresh, nutritious and home-cooked meals, with menus designed around residents' preferences, dietary requirements and individual needs.

We use local produce where possible and regularly seek residents' feedback about our menus and the meals they would like to see.

Residents have choice around where they prefer to dine, and we aim to make mealtimes relaxed, sociable and enjoyable rather than simply part of the daily routine.

Families are always welcome to be part of life at Dairy Lane and can join their loved ones for meals and special occasions.

❤️ Person-Centred Dementia Care

Every resident is an individual, and our care reflects this.

Our team provides person-centred care and support, taking time to understand each resident's history, abilities, communication needs, preferences and routines.

For people living with dementia, we recognise that changes in behaviour or emotional presentation can often be a way of communicating an unmet need. Our approach focuses on understanding the person, providing reassurance and supporting them in the least restrictive and most respectful way possible.

Care plans and risk assessments are regularly reviewed, and we work closely with residents, families, GPs, community professionals and other healthcare services to respond to changing needs.

🎨 Activities, Outings & Meaningful Days

Life at Dairy Lane is about much more than receiving care.

We have a dedicated activities team providing a varied programme of social activities, entertainment, celebrations, creative sessions and meaningful occupation.

We also recognise that meaningful activity looks different for every person. Some residents enjoy group activities and entertainment, while others prefer conversation, quieter activities, time outdoors or individual engagement.

Our residents enjoy opportunities for days out and community activities, and we actively listen to residents and families when planning future events and outings.

Recent activities have included live entertainment and music, including visiting musicians, as well as outings such as our resident trip to Beamish Museum.

🎖️ Supporting Our Armed Forces Community

Dairy Lane is proud to be developing its commitment to the Armed Forces community.

We have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and achieved our Bronze Defence Employer Recognition Scheme commitment/work, alongside our work towards the Veteran Friendly Framework.

We have designated Veteran Champions within the home and are developing opportunities to identify, recognise and support residents, relatives and staff who have an Armed Forces connection.

This work is particularly important to us because someone's military service can form a significant part of their identity, memories and life story — something that can remain especially meaningful for people living with dementia.
